Arthritis means pain and swelling in the joints. Joints are the places where bones meet, such as the knees, hands or hips. It can cause stiffness, swelling and trouble moving. Arthritis has many types. The most common are osteoarthritis, where the joint breaks down over time, and rheumatoid arthritis, where the immune system attacks the joints. - What are the different types of arthritis? Arthritis has more than 100 types. The most common are osteoarthritis, where joint cartilage breaks down, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease. Others include psoriatic arthritis (linked to psoriasis), gout (crystals in a joint), lupus arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (mostly in the spine) and juvenile arthritis (in children under 16). - What are the symptoms of arthritis? Common signs of arthritis are joint pain, stiffness, swelling and less movement. Many people also notice warmth or redness around the joint. Stiffness in the morning that gets better as you move is common, too. Over time, joints can get harder to move, and the area may feel weak or sore. - What causes arthritis? The cause depends on the type of arthritis. Common causes include joints breaking down over time, autoimmune disease, uric acid crystals, and joint injuries or infections. Your genes, age and weight can also raise your risk. Because the causes differ, your rheumatologist first finds your type. Then they plan your treatment. - Do I need a referral from my insurance carrier, medical group, or primary care physician? Yes, if you have an HMO plan. All HMO plans need written approval (an authorization) from your primary care doctor. If you come without the approval you need, you can pay for the visit or move it to another day once you have it. Getting the right approval is up to the patient. - Do I have to pay at the time of my appointment? Your co-pay for a specialist visit is due when you check in. You also pay toward your deductible if you have not met it yet. If you are not sure what you will owe, please call our office at (951) 781-7700 before your visit. Our team will be glad to help. - Will the doctor discuss my test results over the telephone? We go over all test results at your next office visit. But if a result is life-threatening, the doctor will call you to talk about it. If you have questions between visits, please call our office at (951) 781-7700. Our team will help you. ## En español (Spanish) The full site is also in Spanish at https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/. - [Enfermedad de Still del Adulto](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/adult-onset-stills-disease/) - [Espondilitis Anquilosante](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/ankylosing-spondylitis/) - [Síndrome Antifosfolípido](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/antiphospholipid-syndrome/) - [Fibromialgia](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/fibromyalgia/) - [Gota](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/gout/) - [Lupus](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/lupus/) - [Dermatomiositis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/dermatomyositis/) - [Osteoartritis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/osteoarthritis/) - [Osteoporosis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/osteoporosis/) - [Polimialgia Reumática](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/polymyalgia-rheumatica/) - [Artritis Psoriásica](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/psoriatic-arthritis/) - [Artritis Reactiva](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/reactive-arthritis/) - [Policondritis Recidivante](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/relapsing-polychondritis/) - [Artritis Reumatoide](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/rheumatoid-arthritis/) - [Sarcoidosis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/sarcoidosis/) - [Esclerodermia](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/scleroderma/) - [Síndrome de Sjögren](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/sjogrens-syndrome/) - [Espondiloartritis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/spondyloarthritis/) - [Arteritis de Takayasu](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/takayasu-arteritis/) - [Vasculitis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/condiciones/vasculitis/) - [Solicitar una Cita](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/solicitar-una-cita/) - [Contacto](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/es/contacto/) ## Legal notices - [Legal Notices](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/legal/): privacy policy, HIPAA notice, nondiscrimination, No Surprises Act, medical disclaimer, terms of use, Medical Board of California notice ## Optional - [Blog](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/) - [CREST Syndrome: The Early Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/crest-syndrome/) - [Undifferentiated Connective Tissue: When Autoimmune Symptoms Don't Fit a Specific Diagnosis](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/undifferentiated-connective-tissue/) - [Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma): The Complete Guide to Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/systemic-sclerosis-scleroderma/) - [Giant Cell Arteritis: The Headache That Should Never Be Ignored](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/giant-cell-arteritis/) - [Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: The Autoimmune Disease That Can Affect the Sinuses, Lungs, and Kidneys](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/granulomatosis-with-polyangiitis/) - [Microscopic Polyangiitis: Understanding This Rare Autoimmune Blood Vessel Disease](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/microscopic-polyangiitis/) - [Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: Understanding This Rare Autoimmune Disease](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/eosinophilic-granulomatosis-with-polyangiitis/) - [Raynaud’s Phenomenon: Understanding Why Fingers and Toes Change Color in Cold or Stress](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/blog/raynauds-phenomenon/) - [General Information](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/patients/general-information/) - [Living Well With Rheumatic Disease](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/patients/living-well-with-rheumatic-disease/) - [Privacy Policy](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/privacy-policy/) - [Accessibility](https://arthritismedicalclinic.org/accessibility/)
